Instructor Biographical Sketches:

Dave Volz has over 22 years of experience in the radiological treatment and emergency response. He was with the Los Alamos National Laboratory's (LANL) Hazardous Materials Response Team for 17 years, serving as a Hazardous Materials technician/specialist, past Hazardous Materials Team leader, and Training Coordinator. He has provided on-site training to the Department of Energy's radiological response team members, local fire departments, National Guard, Bureau of Indian Affairs, and Former Soviet Union nuclear emergency response personnel. He is a California Specialized Training Institute (CSTI) certified hazardous materials specialist and outreach instructor for First Responder Awareness (FRA), Operational (FRO), FRO Decon, weeks C, D, F, G of the Hazardous Materials Technician/Specialist courses, and an instructor for the SBCCOM Technician, Awareness, Operations and Technician WMD courses. Dave supervised the majority of the design and construction of the first CSTI certified training facility outside the state of California, at the LANL TA-49 Training Grounds. Additionally, he has developed numerous Hazardous Materials related tools and holds a patent on the Remote Container Sampling Device (RCSD) drum vent system (Patent #5,891,038).  

Fred Bolton has over 25 years of experience in health, safety, and emergency response. He was a member of the Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) Hazardous Materials Response Team for 10 years, serving as a Hazardous Materials technician and a past HazMat Team leader. He has provided on-site training to a variety of fire departments, the New Mexico National Guard, Bureau of Indian Affairs, and members of the New Mexico Water & Wastewater Association. He is a California Specialized Training Institute (CSTI) certified hazardous materials technician and Outreach Instructor for First Responder Awareness (FRA), Operational (FRO), FRO Decon, FRO-WMD, and weeks A, B, C & D of the Hazardous Materials Technician/Specialist courses. Fred was the Principal Investigator for the LANL Contaminated Doffing Research Program. He is a registered Professional Engineer (Safety) and a Certified Industrial Hygienist.

John Haynie has over 30 years of diverse operational health physics, emergency preparedness, and response experience in operational health physics, project Management, hazardous materials response, emergency preparedness, and health physics for high energy/high consequence radiography operations. He holds a Masters Degree in Environmental Science, with a major in Radiological Health and a B. S. in Engineering Technology. John also holds a Certificate in Emergency Preparedness Planning and Management and is certified as a Specialist level HAZMAT Responder. He has been with the Los Alamos National Laboratory's (LANL) Hazardous Materials Response Team for the past 12 years, serving as a Hazardous Materials technician/specialist and Team Leader for the Radiological Assistance Program (RAP). He served as one of LANL’s senior health physicists supporting “high energy/high consequence radiography” at drills, exercises, real world deployments and tests. John has provided health physics support to DOE/NNSA’s International Radiological Threat Reduction (IRTR) program and provided operational health physics and industrial safety support to the team in over 12 international locations.

Matt Thompson has over 25 years of experience in the explosive ordinance and emergency response setting. He spent 9 years with the Los Alamos National Laboratory, serving as a Hazardous Materials Technician, Hazardous Devices Team Leader, Training Coordinator, Biological Emergency Support Team (BEST) Program Manager, Operations Deployment Readiness Manager, and Assembly Engineer. Matt’s experience also includes serving 10 years with the US Navy as a Master Explosive Ordnance Disposal Technician, Master Technical Training Specialist, First Class Diver, Marine Mammal Trainer, Naval Parachutist, and Small Boat Coxswain. He is a California Specialized Training Institute (CSTI) certified hazardous materials Technician and outreach instructor and his current position with the US Navy is the CBRNE/EM (Chem, Bio, Rad, Nuc, Explosives/Emergency Management) Coordinator for Navy Region Southwest).
